Why Buy a Plasma Cutter?

If you need to cut through a piece of metal for any reason, your options are fairly limited. You might be able to manipulate a sheet of metal into a band saw. You could use a cut-off wheel, but if you’ve ever tried this, you know that it’s not very effective. Of course, you could use an oxy-acetylene torch. But they are cumbersome, require fuel, and produce an inferior cut in comparison to a plasma cutter.
Plasma cutters are versatile. They can be used on essentially any conductive metal. Depending on the model you are using, they can cut up to and exceeding a thickness of one inch. They do not require fuel. Instead, this tool uses compressed air.

If you don’t have an air compressor handy, not to worry. Many plasma cutters have integrated built in compressors.

Time is money, and buying inferior tools will cost you both in the long run. We have assembled a Top list to assist you in finding the best portable plasma cutter, depending on your needs and applications. Operating a Plasma Cutter

You should not feel intimidated if you have never used a plasma cutter before. They are relatively easy to operate, and are not difficult to get the hang of.

Amperage – The thinner a piece of metal that you are cutting, the less amperage you will need. For example, if you are cutting a piece of sheet metal, you can operate on a low amp setting. However, if you are hoping to blast through an inch of steel, you will need to increase the amperage significantly.

Speed – If you move the plasma torch too fast, you will notice that sparks will fly towards you. Furthermore, you will not get a proper cut. If you are cutting a proper speed, the sparks produced should go towards the floor. Note: Depending on the thickness of the material being cut, and the amperage that you are operating at, optimal speed will differ.

Angle – In general, the plasma cutter torch should be held at a 90 degree angle relative to the material being cut. Holding the torch at this angle will allow you to start your cut at the edge of metal. However, if you want to start a cut that is not at the edge, you will have to make an adjustment. Hold the plasma cutter at a 45 degree angle wherever you want to start the cut. Pull the trigger and steadily bring it back to 90 degrees. Once you have done this, you can continue cutting in whatever direction you wish. This technique is called a pierced delay.

Finish – Depending on the material you are cutting, the cut will have a different appearance. The dross that is created by the plasma cutter should be filed off, especially when it is going to be welded. If the excess metal is not removed from the edge of the cut, it will interfere with the welding process.
