Causes and Preventions of LED Lights Overheating

LED lights are everywhere, from lighting up a building to brightening some holiday decorations. So, LED lights are so standard and modern nowadays. As these lights are energy efficient and safe to use, LED lights can be an excellent source for the project or business.

Many people are concerned about do LED lights get hot. Well, these lights emit much less heat than other light sources, but LED lights still overheat and may cause hazards.

LED lights can run at high temperatures. Still, there is a limit to how much heat the LED can handle. It is vital to use adequate heat sinking to prevent LED lights from overheating. This post will discuss the causes and preventions of LED light overheating.

What Causes LED Lights Overheating

LED overheating may happen by several obvious design factors like inadequate heat sinking and extra LED power. A well-designed LED luminaire can be overheated by installing it in an adverse environment. Therefore, it is necessary to install the LED lights in proper weather conditions by skilled installers.

Besides, there are several more reasons that can cause LED overheating. Such reasons are;

Inadequate Heat Sinking

LED lights come with several mechanisms that convert electrical energy to light and heat energy. If there is excess heat production, the LED lights can burn out.

However, most LEDs come with a heat sinking mechanism that flows to heat away from lights and enables optimal performance. Also, there is inadequate heat sinking sometimes. Due to no heat exchange mechanism, the LED lights become hot.

Spikes in Current and Voltage

There are chances of LED overheating in specific areas where there are possibilities of lightning strikes. With every lightning strike, there are changes in the current and voltage.

Sudden spikes in the voltage adversely affect the devices and may cause temporary damage to the LED lights. If the LEDs are not functioning correctly, they may get overheated most of the time.

Low Quality LED Lights

People look for economical LED lights. Thus, sometimes they get LED lights that are just a waste of money. These LED lights quickly get hot when there is a sudden temperature rise. Even there are chances of life threats if the lights burn and lead to a fire in the entire circuit.

In some extreme cases, overheating LEDs can result in physical damage to the LEDs, plastic lenses, connectors, wires, and printed circuit boards.

Preventions of LED Lights Overheating

However, the chances of any fatal accident are less with LED lights. However, LED lights get overheated and may cause a problem. These lights become extremely hot and burn out eventually. Therefore, one must know the ways to prevent LED lights from overheating.

  • To avoid LED overheating, one must follow the manufacturer’s specifications. Excess energy is a significant reason behind the overheating of LED lights. One must follow the light manufacturer’s specifications to prevent this overheating issue.
  • It is recommended to avoid small and enclosed spaces. If the lights are concealed in a small space, the area becomes hotter quickly, and the lights overheat. It is vital to ensure that the light sources have space to breathe.
  • Increasing ventilation is vital to prevent LED lights from overheating. By increasing the ventilation in the room, one can lower the room’s temperature and stuffiness. With sufficient ventilation, the LED lights will be cooler and won’t cause overheating.
  • Ensure not to place the LED lights in an area with extreme temperatures. Naturally, if the room where the LED light is placed gets hot, the LEDS will overheat. Excessive heat can damage the LED lights permanently. Therefore, one should aim to mount the lights somewhere cooler so that the lights remain cool.

To Sum Up

LED lights have a lot of advantages over other alternative lighting options. Also, regarding overheating, LED lights are less likely to become hotter than other forms of light. Even LEDs are incredibly unlikely to catch fire or give any burns.

Overall, LED lights are a safer lighting option than other bulbs. Still, if there are overheating issues, one can follow the above instructions to avoid LED lights overheating. Besides, LED lights are 25% to 80% more energy efficient than typical incandescent bulbs.

Using LED lights is not only beneficial for saving electricity, but also it saves money on electric bills. And, if treated properly, LED lights last longer than the alternative lighting options.
