The State-by-State Guide to Car Window Tinting Laws

In the U.S., states have the right to make their own laws when they refer to powers not delegated to the federal government.

That means that each state can have its own weird laws regarding everything from moose in Alaska to frog-jumping in California.

If you’re thinking about adding window tint to your car, you’ll want to learn your state’s laws.

Let’s take a look at the window tinting laws in each state.

Alabama and Georgia

You’re allowed up to 32% tinting on all windows. You can have tinting on the top 6 inches of the windshield.

No matter what state you’re in, it’s important to find reliable window tinting services.

Alaska

In Alaska, the front side windows can have car window tinting up to 70% darkness. The backside and rear windows are allowed to tint up to 40% darkness. The windshield can have non-reflective tinting on the top 5 inches.

Arizona

You can have up to 33% window tint on the front side windows. Any amount of tinting is allowed on the back and rear windows. The windshield can have tinting to the as-1 line.

Arkansas

Both the front and back windows can have up to 25% tinting. Rear windows can have up to 10% darkness. The windshield can have non-reflective tinting on the top 5 inches.

California, Delaware, and Iowa

Any tinting is allowed on the back and rear windows. Front windows can have 70% tinting.

In Delaware and Iowa, the windshield can be tinted to the as-1 line. In California, the windshield can have tinting on the top 4 inches.

Colorado and South Carolina

27% of tinting is allowed on all windows. In Colorado, the top four inches of the windshield can be tinted. In South Carolonia the windshield can be tinted to the top of the as-1 line.

Connecticut

The rear windows can have any amount of tinting, while the front and back can have 35%. The windshield can have non-reflective tinting to the as-1 line.

Florida

You can have 15% darkness on the rear and back windows and 28% on the front windows. The windshield can have non-reflective tinting above the as-1 line.

Idaho

You can have 35% tinting on the front and rear windows and 20% on the back windows. The windshield can be tinted to the as-1 line.

Indiana

You’re allowed up to 30% tinting on all windows. The windshield can have non-reflective tinting above the as-1 line.

Kentucky

You can have 18% tinting on rear and back windows. In the front, you can have 35% tinting. The windshield can have non-reflective tinting above the as-1 line.

Louisiana

You can have 40% in the front, 25% in the back, and 12% in the rear. The windshield can have non-reflective tinting above the as-1 line.

Maine, Missouri, and Nevada

35% tinting is allowed in the front and any tinting is allowed in the back and rear. In Missouri and Nevada, you can tint the windshield to the as-1 line. In Maine, your windshield can be tinted on the top four inches.

Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Kansas, Oregon, Tennessee, and West Virginia

You’re allowed 35% tinting on all windows.

In Hawaii, your windshield must allow in at least 70% of light. In Maryland and West Virginia, the windshield can be tinted on the top 5 inches, and in Illinois, Massachusetts, and Oregon it’s the top 6 inches. In Kansas and Tennesse the windshield can be tinted to the top of the as-1 line.

Michigan

Any tinting is allowed in the windows. The windshield can be tinted on the top 4 inches.

Minnesota

You can have 50% tinting on all windows. It’s illegal to tint the windshield.

Mississippi and Wyoming

28% of tinting is allowed on all windows. The windshield can be tinted to the top of the as-1 line in Mississippi. In Wyoming, it’s allowed to whichever comes first between the as-1 line and 5 inches.

Montana

24% tinting is allowed in the front and 14% tinting is allowed in the back and rear. The windshield can be tinted to the top of the as-1 line.

Nebraska

You can tint your front windows to 35% and your back and rear to 20%. The windshield can be tinted either to 5 inches or the as-1 line, whichever line comes first.

New Hampshire

It’s illegal to tint the front windows. You can have 35% tinting in the back and rear. The windshield can be tinted for the top 6 inches.

New Jersey and Vermont

You can have any tinting in the back and rear. It’s illegal to tint your front windows in both states and in NJ it’s illegal to tint your windshield. In Vermont, you can have a windshield tinting to the top of the as-1 line.

New Mexico

20% of tinting is allowed on the windows. The windshield can be tinted either to 5 inches or the as-1 line, whichever line comes first.

New York

70% tinting is allowed for the front and rear, while any is allowed for the back. The windshield can be tinted for the top 6 inches.

North Carolina

35% tinting is allowed in all windows. The windshield can be tinted to the top of the as-1 line.

North Dakota and Ohio

Any tinting is allowed in the back and rear, while 50% is allowed in the front. The windshield must allow more than 70% of the light in.

Oklahoma

You can have 25% tinting in all windows. The windshield can be tinted to 5 inches or the as-1 line, whichever comes first.

Pennsylvania and Rhode Island

You can have 70% tinting in all windows. In Pennsylvania, it’s illegal to tint the windshield, while in Rhode Island the windshield can be tinted to the top of the as-1 line.

South Dakota

You can have 35% in the front and 20% in the back and rear. The windshield can be tinted to the top of the as-1 line.

Texas

You can have 25% tinting in the front and back, with any tinting in the rear. The windshield can be tinted to 5 inches or the as-1 line, whichever comes first.

Utah

You can have 43% tinting in the front and any tinting in the back and rear windows. The windshield can be tinted to the top of the as-1 line.

Virginia and Wisconsin

You’re allowed 50% in the front and 35% in the back and rear. The windshield can be tinted to the top of the as-1 line.

Washington

You can have 24% tinting in all windows. The windshield can be tinted for 6 inches.
