Motorcycle sales have gone up significantly in the U.S. in the last decade.
Some people say there is no better way to take a road trip than to do it on a motorcycle.
If you’re planning on riding a motorcycle a long distance, though, there are a few things you’ll want to do to prepare.
Here are five things to do before embarking on a motorcycle road trip.
1. Choose the Right Motorcycle For You
Different motorcycles are better for different types of trips. You’ll also want to make sure that the motorcycle you’re riding is right for your weight and height.
It’s one thing to bop around town, but riding a motorcycle a long distance is a different animal all together. Your bike should be able to accomodate you comfortable sitting in the same position for several hours at a time.
Also make sure your motorcycle has been properly maintained before you start your trip. You don’t want to get halfway across the country and have an unfortunate surprise!
2. Be Prepared For All Types of Weather
When you take road trips on motorcycles, you’re totally exposed to the elements. It’s totally different than roadtripping in a car, as you’ll experience every rain drop, temperature change, and gust of wind first hand.
Pack layers for your trip expecting a lot of variation along the way. This is also important for your safety in case you get into an accident. Motorcycles get into more accidents than regular vehicles, so it’s important to be prepared.
3. Log an Itinerary With Family or Friends
Even if you’re taking a short motorcycle trip, it’s best to share your itinerary with others before you leave. This is particularly important if you’re going on a solo trip.
4. Bring Tools
Before leaving for your Harley road trip, you’ll probably want to get your motorcycle inspected and serviced by a professional. Even so, make sure you bring tools along for the trip.
When you’re out on the road for days at a time, continuous maintenance will be required. Don’t get caught without the tools you need far from home.
5. Remember to Focus on the Journey, Not the Destination
When you’re going on a road trip, you want to take lots of breaks to stretch your legs and eat some food. Get off the bike and enjoy where your journey has taken you so far.
Don’t fall for the temptation to be in a hurry on your long trip. It’s going to take as long as it takes to get there. Enjoy the ride, and give yourself the breaks you need.
Prepare For Your Motorcycle Road Trip to Make It As Enjoyable As Possible
Remember the old advice: hope for the best and plan for the worst. Taking a bike road trip is a great time, but if you’re unprepared it can turn into a hassle or even a nightmare.
